Aal Izz Well: 3 Idiots

I've been in the dumps lately. I'm not so sure if its because of stress due to the numerous tasks I have to fulfill or the pressure of the roles I need to portray. During one of the talks in the rendezvous that I attended, a speaker told us that we should have a work-life balance. Apparently, I couldn't quite figured out that balance. That is until I watched 3 Idiots last night, and keep it to my heart that Aal Izz Well (All is Well).

3 Idiots is an Indian dramedy (Drama-Comedy) film by Rajkumar Hirani and stars Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi as Rancho, Farhan and Raju. They are three engineering students from the prestigious college, the Imperial College of Engineering and roommates as well. At the first scenes, you would think that it is a cut from the movie Hangover, because of Rancho's disappearance. Chatur (Omi Vaidya) wanted to prove everyone that he would be number one in the future instead of the cocky Rancho. Why of course, would a guy who passionately thrives for machines be as successful as the bookishly intelligent guy anyway right? Guess you'll be in a very big surprise.

Rewind to their college days, the three strives hard to pass Engineering even if Farhan wanted to be a wildlife photographer and Raju studies for the wrong reasons. I am even appalled that even some of the students would pray for the gods and wear rings just to pass. Its an eye-opener of another culture. The sort that makes me want to go to India and discover all of that. :)

As for Rancho, he was a typical devil-may-care guy. He helps his friends when they're failing, he fibs when Raju was fighting for his life, he makes a rocking "inverter" just to piss their director, Professor Viru (or Virus) and falls in love with the girl who's seemingly impossible to have.

But with all the challenges, their philosophy is "All is Well" and somehow, all will be fine. Maybe that is too ideal with the real world. But hey, it never hurts to believe right? One by one, they stood up to their families and principles. Farhan finally told his dad that he never wanted to be an engineer and is only doing that to make him proud. But then if he decides to be an engineer, he'd only curse his father in the future for not letting him follow his passion. Raju then freed himself from the problems of his family. He went to an interview armed with his principles and even with measly grades, he proved them why he would make a great engineer.

Forward to their search, they discovered that Rancho was not really the same guy, but a helper's son who wanted to learn. So he would go to the college named as Rancho Chanchad and earned a degree for their master's son in exchange for his tuition fees and schooling. As for the girl that he loves, the director's daughter, Pia (Kareena Kapoor) was halfway getting married when they thought of her. Raju and Farhan decided to help her get out of a miserable wedding and accompany them to look for Rancho (or Chote, Racho's real nickname).

With that, they arrived at a school where kids love machines and invention is natural for their personality. They were reunited with their friend once again and Chatur was in for the biggest surprise in his life.

3 Idiots is a film where you can laugh and cry at the same time. Oh, and they have song and dance numbers too, reminiscent of past Filipino comedy stories. Their flashbacks made the ending much more interesting and it makes you believe that things happen for a reason. There's also this irony that "when your friend flunks, you feel bad, when he tops, you feel worse", true isn't it? :P

Rating this movie 5 stars. I love how most of the things in this movie are true. If you feel down, 3 Idiots is the perfect film to get your hopes up, minus the suicide clips. But if you wanted to learn more about life, love and friendship, this is a must-have in your video list. And so I impart you with Rancho's words of wisdom: "Dont chase success. Chase excellence. Success will follow".
